A WAR ON TWO FRONTS

Over the past five years, Forward Assist has supported veterans with lived experience of in-service sexual assault, rape and associated trauma. We are privileged to have the trust of those that access our service and by sharing their experiences we hope to raise awareness of the lifelong impact of sexual trauma and in doing so create safer environments for those currently serving or thinking of joining the armed forces. We thank everyone for allowing us to share their lived experience narratives. The concept of fighting a "war on two fronts" typically refers to a military strategy where a nation is engaged in combat on two separate fronts or theatres simultaneously. However, in the context of "Military Sexual Trauma" (MST), it takes on a different meaning. It's deeply concerning that individuals in the military might fear sexual assault from their peers more than from their enemies. This issue highlights the urgent need for comprehensive efforts to address sexual assault and harassment within the UK military. Such efforts should focus on prevention, support for survivors, accountability for perpetrators, while fostering a culture of respect and safety for all service members. Every person in the military deserves to serve their country without fear of sexual violence. (MST refers to sexual assault or harassment experienced by military personnel during their service. It can occur within the military environment, such as in barracks, during training, or in combat zones, and can involve assaults by fellow service members or superiors.)
