The Great 'French Alps' Climbing Adventure
In April 2014, the Forward Assist 'Rock, Ice & Mountain Climbing Cadre' established and led by former Royal Marine Commando and qualified Mountaineering Instructor/Leader Chris Pretty, met in the small town of Vallouise in the Ecrins National Park in the French Alps. www.chrisprettymountaineering.co.uk
The group stayed in a chalet owned by Jerry Gore. Jerry is an internationally acclaimed climber and one of Britain's most prolific expedition leaders. In his 35 year climbing career, he has excelled on rock, ice and high-altitude peaks - often with notable and extreme first ascents. Outside of climbing, Jerry has also enjoyed a varied professional career having served as a Royal Marines Captain, where he was awarded the Commandant General's personal commendation for the most outstanding Royal Marine. He spent nearly a decade as a marketing professional with Cotswold Outdoor and since being diagnosed as an insulin-dependent diabetic in 2001- he now runs his own chalet accommodation and guiding business AlpBase.com in the Southern French Alps.
The trip was financed through Forward Assists Comic Relief 'Sport for Change' funding stream and is the culmination of a year’s individualised climbing tuition and training during which veterans with personal experience of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), homelessness, addiction and adjustment disorder have excelled themselves by developing climbing skills that have significantly improved their own health and wellbeing whilst working through the MTUK Awards Scheme. This will enable the candidates to re-integrate back into society and gain full time employment. We intend to make this trip an annual event and look forward to another great climbing adventure in 2015 with veterans and their families.
