Forward Assist Angling Academy gets Veterans Hooked on Fishing
The Forward Assist Angling Academy was set up to offer a safe therapeutic activity for veterans suffering from PTSD or mobility issues. Funded by The Big Lottery 'Awards for All' scheme and The Sir James Knott Trust the project is able to offer free angling day trips to groups of veterans accessing the support of Forward Assist. Over the course of a year the veterans have so far attended 27 sessions and experienced Fly,Coarse and Sea fishing including a trip out on a boat fishing for Mackerel in the North Sea. Ed Turnbull an Angling Development Trust Qualified Angling Coach has been commissioned to deliver the sessions /coaching and already has several veterans in his sights that could gain a Level One coaching qualification over time. The group of veterans also offer free angling sessions to other community groups such as young people with learning difficulties and their carers, older people with physical disabilities and the Stroke Association. These community orientated sessions allow the veterans to re-gain dignity, promote self respect and a give them sense of purpose to assist in the transition from soldier to citizen.
