Forward Assist 'Mountain Climbing Cadre' Tackle Classic Climbs

Over the course of a sunny weekend five members of the Forward Assist Mountain Climbing Cadre honed their recently acquired skills by tackling some of the classic rock climbing routes at Simonside and Crag Lough. The cliffs are all located within the  Northumberland National Park which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The ascents took place on dolomite and sandstone rock and offered an abundance of low to mid grade routes. Crag Lough and Peel Crag are situated adjacent to Hadrian’s Wall at Once Brewed, in West Northumberland and offer the highest concentration of quality  routes in the County, with several three star D – VS climbs. Their accessibility and northerly aspect made them a great late summer venue with the west-facing walls enjoying the benefit of the sun from lunchtime onwards. The veterans found the weekend challenging and exhilarating. Many thanks to Chris Pretty from 'Chris Pretty Mountaineering' for supervising the weekends climbing and mentoring the fledgling mountaineers. Chris will be leading the group when we take the training to the next level during our planned trip to the French Alps in 2014. www.chrisprettymountaineering.co.uk
