Forward Assist & ATCIC deliver a 10 week Accredited Mentoring Course for Veterans in Custody
Forward Assist in partnership with the Regular Forces Employment Association has successfully delivered a 10 week 'Veteran Specific' Accredited Mentoring Course for veterans serving custodial sentences. The course which is accredited with the OCNNER was described as a great success by Steve Lambert the Veterans in Custody lead Prison Officer. responsible for all veterans in HMP Northumberland. He reported that the Veteran Mentors were already taking an active role in supporting and signposting veterans new to the Prison System to appropriate services. The Veteran Mentors will be issued with sweatshirts that identify them as prison based 'Veteran Mentors' and it is envisaged this will assist Prison staff in the early identification of Veterans that may have slipped through the net and are in need of 'Information Advice Guidance and Support. The Veteran Mentors will be presented with their Certificates at a Veterans in custody Open Day in November, during which family members and significant others will be present to to celebrate their success. Tony Wright CEO of Forward Assist originally brought the concept of such a service back from the States after visiting several Prisons in Pennsylvania during a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust funded Travelling Fellowship in 2011. Two of the Prisons he visited had introduced similar initiatives specifically for incarcerated veterans and he could see the need for such a service in the UK. " I am delighted that all 13 veterans that started the course completed it and the feedback from both the Veteran prisoners, prison staff and the RFEA course facilitator has been so positive. I am convinced that this course could be rolled out Nationally and will go a long way to reducing further offending for those veterans that find themselves involved with the Criminal Justice System"
